What a horrible christmas present for the golfer in your family! With all the holiday movies upon us I thought I might have a little fun with the title of the new movie called "Christmas with the Kranks" starring Tim Allen and Jamie lee Curtis.
The shank has to be one of the most dreaded shots in golf.Even the top professionals are capable of having this problem.Don't take the shank lightly if it happens to you.Get some professional help as it is vey curable.Very few golfers understand the cause. In fact most people if you asked them to shank the ball on purpose can't do it.
A shank is a shot that squirts off the clubface and goes dead right. If your having this problem and your trying to work it out at the driving range make sure no one is hitting balls next to you on your right as they are in danger. The cause and cure:First one must understand the shank. The ball makes contact on the inside of the hosel(neck)of the clubhead. Therefore the clubhead has to be traveling from outside-in with the face slightly closed. Most players think the shank is caused by the face being open at impact.Wrong!
On the downswing, keep the shoulders passive so that the club is being pulled down on the inside of your intended target line(keeping the clubhead on correct planeswing).Allow your wrists to hinge naturally.Don't let them break.Shanks are encouraged by a faulty stance. The weight should be evenly distributed on both heels. The knees should be flexed to give balance to your motion.Keep your head down and feet closer on shorter shots.
For the fuller shots, don't let your left shoulder dip. This causes hands and wrists to get flippy resulting in a loose grip at the top of the backswing which means your losing control and will automatically throw the clubhead on the downswing into too steep an angle creating a shanking possibility.Correct feet and leg action provides a true and proper swing arc.Learn this simple motion and your on your way to a "Shank-free"game of golf.
Here are some fun golf expressions to help you speak the slang of real golfers: Bo Derek; A term used to describe a perfect shot,in refrence to her famous film role"10".Archie: A ball that lands in the bunker.Johnny Cochran:To face a shot with such a terrible lie that only lawyer Johnny Cochran can save you.Captain Kirk:A shot that goes where no man has gone before.Bowling lane: A narrow fairway.Barber: A golfer who uses questionable math to shave off strokes of his score.Aerosol man:A golfer who sprays their shots all over the course.
