  The Head movement

The head is a very interesting position as it relates to the golf swing. Untold number of golfers over the years have asked this question:" Why can't I keep my eye on the ball?"
They blame all their topped shots on looking up at impact. This is not necessarily the main reason for their mistake. The head plays a major role in the golf swing although it barley moves. The head is the center of balance; therefore it must stay in position for you to be effective in swinging the clubhead consistently.
Maintaining a steady head seems to be one of the more difficlut things for most golfers to achieve. One of the main reasons is tension. You must be free of tension in the body movements or they will destroy a smooth flowing movement of your swing. Without this freedom of tension all motions will become too stiff and something will have to give and normally it will be the head.

Inactive or stiff leg action will cause the head to move laterally or to lower or raise. With the head moving out of center the body is out of balance. Being off balance creates a throwing action in your swing.Balance starts at the address position. If the weight is too much on the toes or the heels the player is sure to lose his or her balance. The weight must be toward the inside of the feet which must be the proper distance apart. A steady head is the solution to balance. Keep your head in the same position all through the swing. One of the greatest myths in golf is"keep your eyes on the ball". I think I proved that you don't need to see the ball to hit it because of my work over the years with the legally blind. They obviously can't see the ball so they have to keep a steady head and allow the clubhead to swing around their body and trust their swing mechanics to get the job done. Any movement will cause their heads to move and they would top or miss the ball, so they focus more on letting the club do the work instead of trying to force the issue with undo amounts of force.

As painful as it sounds, imagine if you drove a stake from your head to your feet through your body. You would rotate around a fixed axis and wouldn't be able to move laterally. Use this image next time your practicing to help you understand how important it is to stay centered during the golf swing. You will do this quite easily and your head will remain steady. In turn, your shots will stay straight towards your intended target.
