  The swing is the thing

The swing should fit the individual-not the individual fit the swing. There are three basic swings: inside-to-inside, inside-to-outside, and outside-to-inside.There is one more- the one I prefer: inside-to-direct.

I see many players trying to swing the club on line, straight back, straight through. This is virtually impossible and highly inconsistent. The golf swing is not designed for this type of action and neither is your body.

There has been alot of talk over the years on upright, medium and flat planeswings. I think the better wording would be steep or shallow. To develop the best plane-swing is to learn to syncronize the five body motions which we will discuss in the next article. These motions are not difficult to learn, in fact they are really quite easy to understand as you will see.

The only reason for these five moves to be difficult to execute, and that is the golf ball. All golfers will automatically make a better swing without a golf ball in front of them. Why? Without a ball there is nothing to hit, so we swing. The ball hypnotizes us into hitting it. That is the biggest problem all golfers will face. Swing, not hit. The ball will get in the way. Hitting action deteriorates the motion necessary to swinging the club properly. The dominating left side will not have a hitting action on the downswing, it will be a pulling action. The throwing action comes from the right side.

The only two ways you can move an object is to pull or push(throw). The only position that one can pull in is in front of the object. Behind it you have to push(throw).Let me give you an example.I taught a class of blind golfers. After I taught them and moved them through the five body actions, I placed a ball down and they all made good contact with the ball. They saw no Ball. They were not hypnotized into hitting the ball. Their action was a swinging motion.Keeping your eyes on the ball is okay if it doesn't register a hitting action in your mind. Keeping your eyes on the ball will keep your head steady is a myth. The eyes don't move the head, the shoulders move the head, regardless of where the eyes are.

Balance is so important to a swinging motion. Using the head as the center of balance, eye position is a must. People who have lost their sight know the importance of keeping centered over the ball and trusting their swing fundamentals to get the job done. For proper eye position, keep the face vertical until after impact, letting the eyes follow the ball by rotating the head to the left, looking up and at the ball with the eyes in more of a vertical position. Following the ball with the eyes horizontal raises the head. The head moving from its center position will cause a loss of balance and motion resulting in wayward shots and less than solid contact.
